Detailed Accident Report
Submitted By: AAA
Place: Inyo County, John Muir Wilderness, Meysan Lake, Mt. Mallory
Summary: 1 climber caught, buried and killed
On November 5, a UCLA graduate physics student headed into the Sierras for an extended hiking/climbing trip. That day he bought some supplies and he text-messaged a friend saying he was headed to Mt. Russell. He failed to return back to school on November 14. However, the subject did not go to the Mt. Russell area. On November 18, his snow-covered vehicle was located and a note he left behind said he was headed to the Mt. Mallory and Mt. Irvine area, about 4 miles south-southeast of Mt. Russell. Search teams headed into the field to check summit register, but his name did not appear. Late on Friday, the 20th, searchers found some clues in avalanche debris to the south and west of Meysan Lake. The following day rescuers equipped with a Recco detector located the body.
The accident date is unknown, but estimated to be on or before November 10. By that date a couple of storms had just cleared out after leaving 1-3 feet of snow across the Sierras.
