Detailed Accident Report
Submitted By: AAA
Place: Hatcher Pass, West side, Grubstake Gulch
Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, buried and killed
On Friday afternoon a 35-year-old snowmobiler was caught, buried and killed in an apparently small avalanche in the Craigie Creek area on the west side of Hatcher Pass. The man was riding with two other friends, and all were equipped with rescue gear. It is unknown, at this time, whether the snowmobilers triggered the avalanche or if it was a natural release. At the time of the accident the avalanche danger was rated considerable at higher elevations and moderate at lower elevations, and that the danger was expected to worsen. The victim's friends uncovered the man relatively quickly from a 6-foot burial, and performed CPR for nearly an hour without success. Blizzard-like conditions prevented recovery until Saturday morning.
This is the second avalanche death in the Hatcher Pass area this winter. On November 22, a solo backcountry skier was likely buried in avalanche somewhere on the eastern side of the pass, but his body has not yet been located. Information: avalanche.org
