Summary: 6 backcountry riders caught and buried, 5 killed

A group of six riders* were caught in an avalanche in the Sheep Creek area near Loveland Pass this afternoon. Five died. The group was in uphill travel mode and likely triggered the avalanche from low in the track or even from runout zone. The five killed were all swept into the drainage bottom. The crown face of the avalanche was estimated at 4-6 feet and up to 8-10 feet in spots. The width is over 600 feet.

* One of the riders may have been on AT-gear, and one rider was using the MTNApproach System set up.

The CAIC will visit the site on Sunday.
