Summary: 1 snowboarder caught, buried, and killed
CBC NEWS, VANCOUVER - A 25-year-old snowboarder who died in a British Columbia avalanche was an instructor on Cypress Mountain. He was snowboarding in a closed area that has claimed other lives.
Gordon Nigel Miller died in an avalanche Christmas Eve at Cypress Bowl, in West Vancouver. He was buried under one and a half meters of snow.
The 25-year-old and his sister were snowboarding Christmas Eve in a dangerous out-of-bounds area, said Cpl. Tim Kravjanski of West Vancouver police.
"The sister stopped because she couldn't continue. He continued down without knowing she had stopped (and he) snowboarded into unstable area and caused an avalanche. Search and rescue found them about five hours after the fact," Kravjanski told CBC News.
Authorities warn the heavy snow that has hit British Columbia has made the risk of avalanches much greater.
