Summary: 1 skier caught buried and killed

The event occured on Saturday 18, 2000 at 1430 on the East facing slope on the cuve des Melezes at Mount Albert. 3 guys, 2 of them on snowshoes and 1 on skis climbed up on the Mount Albert plateau. the guy on skis decided to go down a gully with a 35-40 degree slope. The 2 other guys stayed on a rock cliff to watch. The victim a 26 year old man, skied the first third of the slope and a huge avalanche started in front and behind him. The slab was 300 m wide and 300 - 400 m long. The avalanche deposistion was about 30000 cubic meters. The victim was completely buried. His 2 friends quickly came down and tried to search, in the snow with their hands and snowshoes. They didn't have tranceivers, shovels and probes. They searched about 1.5 hours before they decided to head back for help. The rescuers arrived on the site by 1800 and searched until midnight. The didn't find the body. The next morning, a group of 30 people searched all day long to find the victim with probes. Finally, the body was recovered at 1650 on Sunday under 1 meter of snow.
