Summary: 1 ski mountaineer caught by a cornice collapse

On Sunday, March 5, a ski mountaineer on a trip with the British

Columbia Mountaineering Club was killed on Mt. Cheam, about 10 km

southeast of Chiliwack, B.C. (about 75 km east of Vancouver, B.C. in the

Fraser Valley). The group had reached the top when the victim walked a

few metres down the summit ridge to take a picture of the group. At

this point, the cornice collapsed and the victim fell about a 100 metres

down onto the north face of the mountain. At this point, the falling

cornice started a large avalanche, which swept the victim farther down

the face.
