Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught buried and rescued

From the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center Advisory on 12/27/00

Yesterday we found out that a snowmobiler was buried on Christmas in

the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone. Miraculously he survived his

10 to 15 minute burial without any physical trauma. The details we

received are a little incomplete, but it seems that he triggered the

avalanche near the bottom of a slope as he tried freeing his stuck

sled. The slide was estimated to be 150 to 200 feet across, but we

have no further information on steepness, depth or length. The

avalanche was witnessed, and the track of his snowmobile was exposed

in the debris. Removing the sled they found an arm or boot showing

and dug him up which was lucky since no one in the family of four had

any transceivers or rescue equipment. Fortunately two passerby?s had

shovels to expedite the process. Talk about a Christmas miracle!
