Pagoda Peak, North side of Flat Tops, in Northeast Rio Blanco County. 35 miles ENE of Meeker and 36 miles SW of Steamboat.
Elevation: 11,100 feet
A 31-year-old Craig man was buried and killed in a medium-sized avalanche that was triggered while he and other snowmobilers were high marking. One other rider was partly buried. The soft slab avalanche occurred at about 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. Rescuers from Rio Blanco Sheriff's Search and Rescue and Routt County Search and Rescue found the man about 8:00 pm while spot probing a portion of the debris. He was buried under 3 feet of snow. He was still on his snowmobile which was completely buried. Rescuers described the avalanche as 300-400 feet wide by 400 vertical feet.
