Two Killed After Canadian Avalanche
KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) 24 Two snowboarders were killed near a Canadian Rocky Mountain resort on Sunday, police said.
The two, both Canadian, were killed when they were caught in an avalanche in the back country of Fortress Mountain resort in Kananaskis, about 60 miles southwest of Calgary.
Don Cohn of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said two groups of snowboarders were caught in the avalanche, which struck about a mile outside of the resort's boundaries. All were in their teens and early 20s.
One of the dead snowboarders was buried for more than an hour and was eventually located by a rescue dog, officials said. The other was dug out, but died on the hill of his injuries.
One of the victims was 17, the other 22.
A third snowboarder was airlifted to Calgary where she was listed in stable condition. Cohn said it is unclear how many of the eight snowboarders were actually swept under by the avalanche.
``I think the majority of them stayed above the snow,'' he said.
Kananaskis is the host site for the G-8 world leaders' summit in June.
