Man killed in B.C. backcountry avalanche identified as Alberta resident
VALEMOUNT, B.C. (CP) -- A snowmobiler who died after being caught in an avalanche not far from this Rocky Mountain community has been identified as a 50-year-old Alberta man. Daniel Rains of Leduc, Alta., was buried in the slide that hit the backcountry mountain area south of Valemount on Saturday afternoon, said RCMP Const. Richard Lanz.
"CPR was given, but to no avail," he said. Rains was snowmobiling in the area with several others.
Two other Albertan snowmobilers were also buried in the slide but were quickly rescued and were not injured, said Lanz. Valemount is located about 250 kilometres north of Kamloops, near the B.C.-Alberta border.
RCMP also responded to another avalanche earlier in the day, which "resulted in one person being partially buried," said Lanz.
