Squaw Valley Ski Patroller Dies After Avalanche

By: and The Associated Press

Date: March 3, 2009

RENO, Nev. -- A member of Squaw Valley USA's ski patrol died at a hospital Tuesday after he was caught in an avalanche, the Squaw Valley Fire Department said.

Andrew Entin, 41, was doing avalanche control work on a headwall with a partner when he was caught by the avalanche and partially buried, representative Pete Bansen said.

Entin's partner dug him out and emergency workers responded, Bansen said.

He sustained multiple fractures and trauma as a result of the avalanche, Squaw Valley officials said.

The ski patroller was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee and then to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he died.

Bansen said Entin was a longtime member of the Squaw Valley ski patrol.

"The Squaw Valley Family unites in wishing Andrew Entin's wife and family our deepest sympathy. Our hearts go out to them at this difficult time. We will not forget Andrew, his camaraderie and his courage," Squaw Valley USA chairman and CEO Nancy Cushing said.

Entin had been working the same route for nine years, Squaw Valley officials said.

More than 4 feet of snow have fallen at upper elevations of the region over the last 24 hours.
