Submitted By: MSAC
Place: Pelican Butte, near Klamath Falls
Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, fully buried and recovered
***PRELIMINARY REPORT FROM MSAC***
Information is all second hand so far. A group of snowmobiles was riding in the bowl on the east face of Pelican Butte when 1 rider triggered an avalanche and went for a 180-215 m(6-700 ft.) ride. His partners were parked in the avalanche path and the slide stopped at their sleds. He was buried, but his glove was showing. They were able to dig him out, unharmed. Some stories say he had a transceiver which was turned off at the time of the incident. The slope is a NE aspect with the top at approximately 2348 m (7700 ft.) The area had recently received 30-45 cm (1-1.5 ft.) of snow followed on Jan. 1 by freezing rain creating a weak rain crust in the top 1 cm.
