Avalanche takes life in Teton County

Search and Rescue crews recovered a 62-year-old man Saturday who was buried in an avalanche on Garns Mountain.

The man later died at Teton Valley Hospital. His name is not being released pending family notification. He was transported to Teton Valley Hospital after first responders started CPR, according to a release from the Teton County Sheriff's Department.

At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man who had been buried in an avalanche on the north side of Garns Mountain. Reports were that a father and son were in the area on snowmobiles. The son made initial 9-1-1 call to Madison County, who initiated search with Teton County, Idaho, according to the news release.

Teton County, Idaho Search and Rescue, with the assistance of Madison County Search and Rescue and helicopter assistance from Jackson Hole, Wyo. Search and Rescue responded to the area.

Individuals were located by air at 3:09 p.m., CPR was in progress, and the man was taken to Teton Valley Hospital by ambulance.
