Heavy snows recent snows have fallen in the Missoula area and this morning's bulletin by the West Central Montana Avalanche Center started with, "This is certainly shaping up to be a memorable late February." Nine hours later that statement was confirmed.

Shortly after 4pm this afternoon (Friday) an avalanche released above town off the west side of Mt. Jumbo. The avalanche destroyed two houses and buried three people. One young boy was outside when caught, and the two others were inside a destroyed home. All were pulled from the snow and wreckage alive.

A bit of history: On Jan 9, 1993 a hard slab avalanche was triggered by young hikers on the east side of Mt. Jumbo. One boy was partly buried, and two were buried; one 12-year-old boy survived a 30-minute burial. Sadly, his 13-year-old friend died after being buried over 2 hours.
