An ad hoc group of 3 peak climbers (originally 2 and joined by a 3rd on the trail) were following the popular summer trail to Grays and Torreys Peaks, a pair of popular 14,000-foot peaks west of Denver. The 3 were following skin tracks put in earlier in the morning. "At least 5 people" had crossed the suspect slope before the arrival of the climbers. The 3 were uncomfortable with the crossing but decided to crossed anyways. The second person -- on snow shoes and carrying a heavy pack -- to cross triggered and was buried in a small-sized hard slab avalanche. The victim was located by an avalanche transceiver and uncovered within 20 minutes but rescue came too late.
