We have a tendency to overestimate the likelihood of a positive outcome, especially when we are in a good mood (as is often the case during a backcountry adventure). Emotions can make thinking irrational. If Gerry is exhilarated to be out with his friends on a powder day, he will tend to see the next ski run going safely even if the snowpack is presenting doubts.
