Because a significant portion of avalanche fatalities are the result of trauma, it is a good idea to wear a helmet in the backcountry. For best protection, an alpine ski (EN 1077 Class B) or ski mountaineering (CE EN 12492) certified helmet is recommended for skiers, snowboarders, and mountaineers. Full face helmets are recommended for snowmobilers.
