Evidence suggests that larger group sizes (4 or more people) are more at risk for getting caught in an avalanche due to a heightened risk tolerance, and challenges in communication and decision making. In addition, larger groups impact more parts of a given slope, thereby increasing the possibility that a member of the party will hit a trigger point and release an avalanche.
