When a portion of the snowpack undergoes melt and subsequent refreezing

Liquid water generated through melt or rain kickstarts snowpack metamorphic processes by either breaking ice-to ice-bonds, or by creating new ice bonds. In a general sense, snow weakens as ice-to-ice bonds break, and strengthens as they are created. Some of the more common melt-freeze related terms are described below.
