The environmental danger of avalanches

Avalanche hazard, which is synonymous with avalanche danger, is the environmental danger of avalanches, independent of human interactions. Hazard is defined by the likelihood and size of avalanches. The larger and more common avalanches are, the higher the hazard. A day with many small avalanches can be equally hazardous as a day with only a few but very large avalanches.

Hazard functions independently of human interactions. It’s only when we expose ourselves to hazards that we take on risk.  Credit: Zach Guy
