Although snowpack and weather are highly dynamic and subject to uncertainty, terrain is a constant variable that is integral for managing avalanche hazards.  When snow stability is in question, terrain is the answer.  Recognizing avalanche terrain, and the characteristics of individual slopes, are essential skills for backcountry travel.
